The FDA recently issued a new document with FSMA (food safety modernization act) guidance for smaller producers. If you are a U.S.-based small food or beverage producer, it address the registration requirements and process for registering for your facility.
Note that “food and beverage” also covers diet or nutritional supplements AND food for animals, so you’re not off the hook if make vitamins or pet food.
There is a form to fill out to register your facility but no cost. If you produce out of your personal home, you are no required to register. There are a few other exceptions you should review in their document too.
Registering production facilities helps speed things up in the event of a recall or contamination event.
